»rank: 153819

by: Murray Longmore, Ian Wilkinson, Tom Turmezei, Chee Kay Cheung, Emma Smith

: :In the early 1980s, two junior doctors from Oxford noted down all the medical information they found valuable to keep. As medical students they learned most not from organised lecturers but from clinical sessions - on the ward and in clinic. Useful notes were written on scraps of paper, and it was from this that the original Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine was born. No other book has entered the hearts, minds and pockets of so many doctors and medical students the world over. Now in its 7th edition, the main features and essence of the original edition remain unchanged. Developed over 21 years, the Handbook encompasses the experience, knowledge ...

King Henry V (Shakespeare in Production)

»rank: 887987

by: William Shakespeare

: :This is the first stage history of Shakespeare's King Henry V to cover the play's theatrical life since 1599. Staging this play is a political act, and the substantial Introduction traces its theatrical interventions into conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to Vietnam and the Falklands. The stage and film history raises interpretative questions--is Henry V an epic of English nationalism, a knowing and cynical piece of power politics, or an anti-war manifesto? The volume also includes the play text, illustrations and detailed footnotes about major performances.

The Great Western Beach. by Emma Smith

»rank: 513238

by: Emma Smith

: :The Hallsmiths are a truly remarkable family; or that, at least, is how Elspeth's parents would like to be perceived. But Father, a hero of the Great War, convinced his destiny is to become a famous painter, has to suffer with gritted teeth the ignominy of his actual position in society - that of lowly bank clerk. And although Mother, bereaved of three fiances during the Great War, is at last a married woman with children, she does have the unfortunate knack of upstaging her husband, being, unlike him, tall, charming and admired by everybody. As to the Twins, fearless defiant Pam and sickly bewildered Jim, existence for them is ...

The Cambridge Introduction to Shakespeare (Cambridge Introductions to Literature)

»rank: 1022691

by: Emma Smith

: :Must-have guides designed to introduce students and teachers to key topics and authors. This lively and innovative introduction to Shakespeare promotes active engagement with the plays, rather than recycling factual information. Covering a range of texts, it is divided into seven subject-based chapters: Character; Performance; Texts; Language; Structure; Sources and History, and it does not assume any prior knowledge. Instead, it develops ways of thinking and provides the reader with resources for independent research through the 'Where next?' sections at the end of each chapter. The book draws on up-to-date scholarship without being overwhelmed by it, and unlike other introductory guides to Shakespeare it emphasizes that there is space for ...

The Far Cry

»rank: 1427092

by: Emma Smith

: :This 'savage comedy with a vicious streak' (Elizabeth Bowen in 'The Tatler' in 1949) describes the 'second passage to India' of 'Teresa, whose elderly, willful father drags her off to spare her from the clutches of her mother...I can think of no writer, British or Indian, who has captured so vividly, with such intensity, the many intangibles of the Indian kaleidoscope; Emma Smith harnessed those intense impressions of her youth to give her story a quite extraordinary driving force' wrote Charles Allen in the 'Spectator', going on to agree with Susan Hill in her Persephone Afterword that the book is 'a small masterpiece...beautifully shaped, evocative, moving and mature.' 'The Far ...

San Francisco's Glen Park and Diamond Heights (CA) (Images of America)

»rank: 1023869

by: Emma Bland Smith

: :Hemmed in by steep hills, Glen Park is defined by its quintessentially San Franciscan topography. Only 120 years ago this area, as well as neighboring Diamond Heights, was part of the “Outside Lands,” soisolated that only farmers would settle here. Life revolved around Islais Creek, which ran through the canyon and provided water for the dairies. Then, in 1892, a German immigrant named Behrend Joost founded the city’s first electric streetcar to shuttle residents to jobs downtown, and a neighborhood was born. As peak-roofed wooden cottages and houses began to fill in the valleys, the urban, homey, and decidedly livable Glen Park that we know today began to emerge.
