: :Visual art in the period following World War II witnessed landmark transformations. Today, drawing provides a powerful and vigorous device for reexamining the art of that period, and for renewing appreciation of the extraordinary achievements of well-known artists--and for discovering others. Even though the art of these years saw radical departures and shifts, drawing, which is among the most traditional of media, played a crucial and consistent role in the work of a great majority of the most significant artists. Drawing from the Modern, 1945-1975, surveys the drawing of the period through the unparalleled holdings of the drawings collection of The Museum of Modern Art. The postwar period saw the ...

Urs Fischer: Good Smell Make-Up Tree

»rank: 863249

by: Garrick Jones, Urs Fischer, Brice Marden

: :Urs Fischer's sculptures, drawings, and installations, says curator Beatrix Ruf, strike the viewer 'as if an Internet search engine had generated a massive number of hits leading to technical and mental breakdown.' This book has been conceived by the artist as a cross-reading of his process-related and 'style-less' work through the arrangement of more than 200 images, including reproductions of works, installation views, studio shots, and special features. Using a multitude of ordinary materials, Fischer creates non-hierarchical collages of objects and thoughts, high and low aesthetics, mundane and artistic memories, and personal and political interrogations. Laid out as a studio journal, the publication also includes musical scores from the London-based ...

Brice Marden: Paintings On Marble

»rank: 1071511

by: Lisa Liebmann, Brice Marden

: :This volume provides a rare glimpse into the most intimate works of the internationally acclaimed artist Brice Marden. Twenty years ago, Marden produced a series of small and virtually unknown paintings on the Greek island of Hydra, which the artist first visited in 1971. Inspired by the island's ancient marble quarries, Marden created these private paintings in oil on marble fragments as tokens for friends and family. Between 1981 and 1987, the artist made a total of 32 paintings on marble, gathered together here for the first time in a single volume. The period coincided with changes in his publicly exhibited paintings. In 1987, the date of his last painting ...
